Should Underage Active Duty Military Be Able To Drink?

There's been quite a bit of talk among lawmakers about this notion of underage drinking for active duty military personnel. Should they be able to drink? After all, these people are young enough to serve the country and shoot guns, so why not let them drink legally? Of course, there are many who object to this idea. These young adults are just not mature enough to think logically after they've had a few drinks.

In the past few years lawmakers in quite a few states have been pushing for laws that allow active duty military under 21 to drink. There are even groups on social networking websites have been collecting signatures so that they can get a measure on the ballot to lower the drinking age limit.


At Camp Pendleton, a marine corp base near San Diego, marines are able to drink only when they're on base. However, some business owners and residents have already noticed that there are more problems with drunk driving in the area surrounding the base. Although military personnel can drink on base, once they step off military property they're subject to the 21 age limit law.

Of course, no matter what drinking laws there are, people are going to find a way to buy and drink alcohol. Where there's a will, there's a way, right? I've witnessed teenagers pay people over 21 to buy them a drink. If you live in a city like San Diego which is close to the Mexico border, you'll see thousands of young people heading down to the bars in Mexico to drink.

The bottom line is, it's all about the maturity level of young adults who have been given the opportunity to drink. It's up to them to take responsibility and learn the consequences of their actions. Perhaps if there was better education for younger people about the consequences of drunk driving, they would take it more seriously.
