The Real Score About A Waterbed

Spead the word...

There are many misconceptions about waterbeds, one of them being that if a person is to sleep on the bed, he will get seasick. He would be suffering from nausea until the moment he leaves the bed. It's about time people understand this wondrous invention without any prejudice.

Basics of a Waterbed
Waterbeds fall into two categories - hard sided and soft sided.

A hard-sided waterbed is made up of a water-filled mattress encased in a rectangular frame, usually made of wood. This is placed in a plywood deck which rests on a platform. Some bed-makers started creating platforms that offers drawers for storage that is within easy access of the owner. Meanwhile, soft-sided waterbeds are created by water-filled mattresses encased in a rectangular frame of strong foam. There is a zipper inside the fabric casing, and this mattress is then placed atop the platform.

Traditionally, waterbeds are equipped with a single water chamber, thus, earning the nickname "free flow." Whenever the water was disturbed, there would be a wave-action that could take some time to stabilize. However newer models now offer wave-reducing methods which lessen the movement of the water mass.

Waterbeds are usually heated. The owner can adjust the thermostat according to his personal preference. The material made for the beds is usually vinyl.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Waterbeds
One of the many advantages of a waterbed is that it can be heated. In a cold weather, this is important. A warm environment lowers blood pressure, and the warmth makes the muscles relax. Thus, sleeping in a waterbed can improve one's blood circulation while easing joints and muscles.

The particles of a liquid take the form of the container, and the same is true with a waterbed. It provides exceptional sleeping comfort as the bed hugs the body's shape. This minimizes pressure, which relaxes the spinal muscles. This is especially useful to those who are suffering backache. For those who are bedridden, waterbed reduces bedsores.

On the other hand, waterbeds also have disadvantages. Constant heating, for one, is very costly. Another is that it is hard to find bed sheets for hard-sided mattresses. Moving the bed could also be very troublesome as one would need to drain the water, disassemble the frame, reassemble it, refill the mattress with water, and heat it to get it back to former temperature. The leaks are irritating, and maintenance is difficult. An owner would have to condition both the inside and the outside of the vinyl in order to keep the mattress from being dry and brittle.
